Tell me, what is it you plan to do.....

The Summer Day

Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper?
This grasshopper, I mean—
the one who has flung herself out of the grass,
the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,
who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down—
who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.
Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.
Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.
I don't know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?

~Mary Oliver

Mary Oliver just gets it right every time in my book. Her words are full of such earthy beauty.  I can never get enough.  If you are new to the world of Mary Oliver and love poetry as much as I do, I recommend these two books.   New and Selected Poems, Volume One & New and Selected Poems, Volume Two.  Both are full of her greatest poems.  I hope they bring you solace and comfort if you choose to read them.

I am being featured over on my friend Crystal's blog in her Babes With Blogs series.  Head on over to check it out, there are some wonderful ladies who are featured there.  Also, check out the rest of Crystal's blog, she is awesome!

Also, don't forget to enter the giveaway below for a chance to win a Red Tent Ritual Kit from the lovely Lindsay of Whole Body Alchemy, it is truly a wonderful gift.

  1. I went to a yoga workshop once where she read us a Mary Oliver poem, and it captured my heart. I never thought to pursue it further, but the piece you've shared is extraordinary!

  3. Mary Oliver is one of my favourite poets, I love her intimate connection with and understanding of nature. I love her use of language and the feelings she evokes. I was first introduced to this particular poem on a mindfulness course at our buddhist centre and there my love for her began. Much love X
